Rivian Unveils Entry-Level Electric SUVs: The R3 and the Rugged R3X

R2, R3, R3X Revealed | Rivian

Rivian has announced the upcoming addition of the R3 and R3X models to its vehicle lineup, anticipated to debut as 2027 models. The R3, a subcompact SUV, shares its platform with the newly introduced R2 but features a five-inch shorter wheelbase. The R3X variant is designed for adventure, boasting three electric motors, wider wheels and I’m tires, and increased ground clearance compared to the standard R3. Rivian surprised attendees at the R2 SUV unveiling by also presenting the R3 and R3X, positioning them as future entry-level offerings.

The design of the R3 incorporates Rivian’s signature styling, with compact dimensions and a power-operated rear hatch that includes a unique full-width taillight and a separately opening rear glass for transporting long items. Similar to the R2, the R3 is expected to offer multiple drivetrain and battery options, with an estimated range of over 300 miles and fast charging capabilities.

The R3X, a more robust version of the R3, shares the high-output tri-motor powertrain of the top Rivian models, further distinguishing itself with a distinctive teal and orange color scheme, aggressive tire tread, and a design reminiscent of ’80s rally cars. The interior features stylish Italian-inspired ribbed seats and a spacious glass roof, enhancing the cabin’s ambiance. Both models offer fold-flat seating for additional utility.

While pricing details for the 2027 Rivian R3 and R3X have yet to be released, expectations suggest the R3 will be priced between $35,000 and $40,000, with the R3X likely starting between $45,000 and $55,000, making them more affordable options compared to the larger R2.
